Three transatlantic joint ventures, one negotiation each
A transatlantic joint venture shares revenue across its partners regardless of whose aircraft flies the passenger. For a buyer, that means a discount from one partner and a different discount from another on the same route is a missed opportunity: the JV can and should price the whole corridor.
| Joint venture | Partners | London base | Alliance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atlantic Joint Business | British Airways, American Airlines, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus | Heathrow (BA’s main hub), Gatwick, London City for short-haul feed | oneworld |
| Delta–Air France-KLM–Virgin Atlantic | Delta, Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic | Heathrow (Virgin Atlantic) | SkyTeam |
| United–Lufthansa Group–Air Canada | United, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Air Canada | Heathrow nonstops plus one-stop via Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich | Star Alliance |
British Airways holds the largest share of Heathrow slots by a wide margin, which makes the Atlantic Joint Business the default for most London programs and the hardest to move. The tactic is a credible split: offer the second JV a defined share of a city pair (London–New York, London–Boston and London–San Francisco are the usual candidates) and let the incumbent price to keep it.
- Ask for JV-level terms in writing. One agreement, one discount table by fare class, and a statement that it applies on every partner’s flights within the JV scope.
- Set both points of sale. A US-headquartered company with a London office buys tickets in the US and the UK. The agreement should name both points of sale, or half the volume falls outside it.
- Measure share on the corridor, not the network. A target written as share of total US–Europe spend lets a JV hit it on routes you did not care about.
Mid-market programs with $1M–$5M of air spend typically see 3%–8% point-of-sale discounts on high-density pairs and 2%–4% in soft-dollar credits. Confirm the fares are loadable in your TMC channel: carrier NDC strategies and GDS surcharges can erase a discount, as shown on Corporate Airline Sourcing and NDC Surcharges.
Central London hotel LRA and cap benchmarks by area
UK hotels quote rates including 20% VAT, so a London rate always looks higher than a US rate quoted before tax. The ranges below are Business Travel Consulting 2026 benchmarks for negotiated corporate rates at four-star and upper-midscale properties, in GBP, VAT included, room only. Convert at your budget rate for USD reporting.
| Area | Main corporate demand | Typical 2026 corporate LRA | Peak-night public rate | Cap structure to contract |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City of London (Bank, Liverpool Street) | Banks, insurers, Lloyd’s market | £230–£340 | £450–£700 | Static LRA, Monday–Thursday guarantee |
| Canary Wharf | Banks, regulators, ExCeL overflow | £190–£290 | £350–£550 | Dynamic BAR −15%, ceiling ≤ £300 |
| Mayfair / St James’s | Private equity, hedge funds, executives | £380–£620 | £700–£1,200+ | Executive tier only, separate cap |
| Westminster / Victoria | Government affairs, consultancies | £220–£330 | £400–£650 | Static LRA, ceiling ≤ £340 |
| King’s Cross / St Pancras | Tech campuses, Eurostar travelers | £210–£320 | £380–£600 | Static LRA for the top two properties |
| Covent Garden / Soho / Fitzrovia | Media, agencies, law | £250–£380 | £450–£750 | Dynamic BAR −12%, ceiling ≤ £390 |
| Paddington | Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line arrivals | £180–£270 | £320–£500 | Overflow tier, 7+ night rate |
| Shoreditch / Old Street | Start-ups, fintech | £190–£290 | £350–£550 | Dynamic BAR −15%, ceiling ≤ £300 |
| Heathrow airport hotels | Early departures, crew, connections | £120–£190 | £220–£350 | Chain-wide rate, NLRA acceptable |
The City and Canary Wharf compress Monday to Thursday all year, so London needs LRA on the top properties even without events. The Elizabeth line, which links Heathrow, Paddington, the West End, the City and Canary Wharf, lets you move overflow volume between those areas with little travel-time cost. The full close-out math is on Hotel RFP Engineering: LRA vs. NLRA.
