Lufthansa Group distribution charges and the NDC decision
In September 2015 the Lufthansa Group began adding a per-ticket distribution cost charge to bookings made through GDS (EDIFACT) channels, while bookings through its own NDC connection and direct channels avoid it. The level, the exempt markets and the fare content reserved for NDC have changed several times since, so verify the current charge in your TMC’s fare display and in your corporate agreement rather than relying on an older figure. The Group covers Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines, with Eurowings as its point-to-point carrier.
- Ask the TMC which channel each Lufthansa Group ticket used. The invoice line rarely shows it. A forensic sample of 50 tickets will show whether you are paying the GDS charge on fares the TMC could have booked through NDC.
- Check that corporate fares load in NDC. A corporate discount that only works in the GDS forces a choice between the discount and the surcharge. The agreement should state that negotiated fares are available in both channels.
- Price NDC servicing. Some TMCs charge extra for exchanges and refunds on NDC tickets. Weigh that fee against the GDS charge it avoids; the method is on Corporate Airline Sourcing and NDC Surcharges.
- Bid the alternatives. Inside Germany, Deutsche Bahn’s ICE network competes with Lufthansa on most domestic routes. Across the Atlantic, Lufthansa Group sits in a joint venture with United and Air Canada that competes with the two other transatlantic JVs, covered in the London transatlantic guide.
Mid-market agreements with $1M–$5M of air spend typically deliver 3%–8% point-of-sale discounts on high-density pairs and 2%–4% in soft-dollar credits. Lufthansa Group also runs a program for smaller companies; programs above that threshold should negotiate a direct corporate agreement.
Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and Vienna hotel rate benchmarks
Business Travel Consulting 2026 benchmarks for negotiated corporate rates at four-star and upper-midscale hotels, in local currency, VAT included, room only (breakfast is often priced separately in Germany). The peak column shows public rates on the largest trade-fair or Oktoberfest nights.
| Area | Main corporate demand | Typical 2026 corporate rate | Peak-night public rate | Cap structure to contract |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt Bankenviertel / Innenstadt | Banks, ECB, law, audit firms | €150–€230 | €350–€700+ | LRA, Messe ceiling ≤ 1.5× rate |
| Frankfurt Messe / Europaviertel / Westend | Trade-fair exhibitors, consultancies | €140–€220 | €400–€800+ | Messe ceiling, pre-booked allocation |
| Frankfurt Airport / Gateway Gardens | Fly-in meetings, connections | €120–€180 | €250–€450 | Static rate, Messe overflow tier |
| Niederrad / Eschborn / Offenbach | Office parks, back-office finance | €95–€150 | €200–€400 | Static NLRA, 7+ night rate |
| Munich Altstadt / Maxvorstadt | Insurance, consulting, executives | €160–€250 | €400–€800 | LRA, Oktoberfest ceiling |
| Munich Hauptbahnhof / Westend | Rail arrivals, near the Theresienwiese | €130–€210 | €400–€900 | Named Oktoberfest dates with ceiling |
| Munich Messestadt Riem / east | Trade-fair exhibitors | €110–€170 | €300–€600 | Messe allocation agreed a year ahead |
| Munich Airport / Freising | Early flights, Messe overflow | €110–€170 | €250–€450 | Static rate, overflow tier |
| Zurich city (Kreis 1, Enge) | Banks, insurers, commodity traders | CHF 230–CHF 340 | CHF 450–CHF 800 | LRA, Monday–Thursday guarantee |
| Vienna Innere Stadt | International organizations, congresses | €150–€240 | €300–€550 | LRA, congress-week ceiling |
Outside trade fairs most DACH submarkets do not compress, so a deeper static rate often works. The exception is the trade-fair calendar, where LRA alone is not enough because hotels price Messe nights separately. The general LRA trade-off is on Hotel RFP Engineering: LRA vs. NLRA.
